Breeze Academy: 9997 – Data communication unavailable. Don't be scared!

Sometimes you can see that turbines have information code 9997 – Data communication unavailable: Turbine – Breeze. This is a general code that means that Breeze doesn’t receive data, specifically the signals “wind speed” and “power”. In this part of Breeze Academy we describe what code 9997 means and how to handle it in Breeze.

For the code 9997 to be logged, wind speed and power must be missing for at least 15 min (90 minutes for turbines without a real time data communication).

Reasons for 9997 Status

  1. There is no communication between Breeze and the wind farm. This can be due to problems with the internet connection, grid failure at the turbine/wind farm or other issues.
  2. Technicians are at the site and have turned off the turbine including all communications.
  3. The server at the wind farm is unavailable. The server might be shut off, the OPC server / ODBC database is offline or the server has lost internet connection.
  4. The communication is working fine, but data isn’t recorded and saved in a proper way for Breeze to collect it.

Recommended Actions

So what should you do if the connection is lost for a longer period? Since there are many different reasons, we recommend these actions.

  1. Check if there are any reasons on your side that might affect the data communication. Maybe the connection goes via a server at your office or you have a server in the wind farm that might be offline.
  2. Investigate if there is any service team at site that might have turned off the communication.
  3. If you have the possibility to connect to the manufacturer SCADA system, investigate if that system receives data.
  4. Contact Breeze so that we can investigate what the problem might be.

Breeze uses status codes to do calculations of availability, lost production and other metrics. What impact will a period with lost connection have on these calculations?

Breeze Automation

If Breeze collects both real time data and stored data from a database at the wind farm, just relax. Breeze will collect the stored data from the wind farm as soon as the connection is up again. But if Breeze only collects real time data, there will be missing data for that period.

Group With Stop Signal

If you have a correct stop signal during the same period as you have 9997, you can force the 9997 code to be grouped with this stop signal. Breeze will always prioritize information from a stop signal before information from a 9997 status code.

Categorize According to Contract

If you know that there was a problem with the turbine/wind farm during this period but you don’t have any status code except 9997, you can categorize this status code according to your contract. For example, if you know there was a service team at the site you can categorize this code as maintenance. Breeze will include this in the availability calculations.

Split Status

If there were different types of problems during this period, you can split the status into one or more status events, and categorize each of them according to your contract.
